Sinti and Roma

Nomadic people originating from north India. They were called gypsies, an abusive term, derived from the German term Gauner, which means thief. Just as the Jews, they were considered an inferior race by the Nazis and were therefore persecuted. On 19 May 1944, 245 Sinti and Roma were deported from Westerbork to Auschwitz-Birkenau. It is estimated that in Europe between 220,000 and 500,000 Sinti and Roma were murdered in concentration camps.
