Sicherheitsdienst (SD)

The Sicherheitsdienst (SD) was founded in 1931 as a security and intelligence service of the SS.

The influence of the SD expanded under leadership of the German commander Reinhard Heydrich. In Amsterdam the headquarters of the SD were set up in Euterpestraat in the building now used for the Gerrit van der Veen School. Here prisoners were violently interrogated. If they survived the interrogation they were sent to the Scheveningen prison for convicted offenders, Amersfoort camp, or to the prison barracks of the Westerbork transit camp. In some cases the local departments (Aussenstellen) of the SD and the Sipo operated quite independently from the SD leadership.
