Reichstag

Reichstag referred to the German parliament. The term Reichstag is a combination of the word Reich (empire) and tag (assembly, also means day). The ruler of the state was called the Chancellor. After the Hitler's National Socialist NSDAP seized power, the Reichstag officially continued to exist. However, after forcing the media to toe the official line, the Reichstag was deprived of all its legislative authorities; the Reichstag only continued to have a symbolic meaning. On 27 February 1933, the Reichstag building was set on fire. The Dutch Communist Marinus van der Lubbe was accused of the crime and sentenced to death. The Nazis seized the opportunity to attack the left political opposition. After the fire, the hunt on communists began. Tens of thousands of party members and sympathisers were arrested. In 1933 one of the first official concentration camps was established in Dachau.
