Night of Broken Glass. Kristallnacht was an incited outburst of anti-Semitism that took place in Germany on the 9th and 10th of November 1938.

A few days earlier the seventeen-year old Jewish youth Herschel Grynszpan assassinated the German diplomat Ernst Rath in Paris. The incident led propaganda minister Goebbels to speak of an international Jewish conspiracy against the German Reich. These accusations instigated a supposedly spontaneous popular outcry. In Germany, Austria, and Sudetenland more than 7,000 Jewish stores were destroyed and looted in a single night, between one and two thousand synagogues were destroyed, 96 Jews were murdered on the street, and many thousands (an estimated 30,000) were deported to concentration camps. Following the Reichskristallnacht, the anti-Jewish measures became even harsher in Germany. Many Jews tried to flee the country.

The name Kristallnacht (Reichskristallnacht) refers to the pieces of broken glass from the Jewish shop windows.
