Rudolf Franz Ferdinand Höss was the German camp commander of the Auschwitz-Birkenau concentration and extermination camp.

From 1934 to 1938 Höss was a Block & Report Leader in the Dachau concentration camp. In Dachau he was trained by camp commander Theodor Eicke. On 27 April 1940, Himmler transferred him to the town of Oświęcim in Poland in order to construct and organise the Auschwitz concentration camp. By then Höss was promoted to SS Obersturmbannführer (Senior Assault (or Storm) Unit Leader). At the end of March 1941 the construction of the extermination camp Birkenau had begun. Until 1943 Höss was camp commander of Birkenau, where large-scale use of the toxic gas Zyklon B was used. He was followed by junior camp commander Obersturmführer Arthur Liebhenschel. In the summer of 1944 Höss was resent to Auschwitz. He was assigned a new task: to make the extermination of Hungarian Jews as well organised as possible. The operation became known as Aktion Höss (Action Höss).

In 1946, he was arrested in Poland and sentenced to death. In 1947, he was hanged in Auschwitz I.
