Asscher

Abraham Asscher was the director of the Asscher Diamond Company and was affiliated with nearly all important Jewish institutions and committees. He was the chairman of the Committee for Special Jewish Interests. This committee was established before 1940 to help the German Jews and raised concerns about the danger of National Socialism.

In 1941 the German authorities named Asscher along with David Cohen as chairperson of the Jewish Council. In 1943, he was deported to Bergen-Belsen and was liberated there in 1945. Five years later, on 2 May 1950, he died in his place of birth, Amsterdam.

After the war the Jewish Community Tribunal found both Asscher and Cohen guilty of reprehensible behaviour. They were both partially blamed for what had happened to the Dutch Jews during the war and forbidden from fulfilling any functions within the Dutch Jewish community.
