Apeldoornse Bos

Het Apeldoornsche Bosch was a Jewish psychiatric institution, situated in the midst of forests near Apeldoorn, where Jews were treated for psychiatric disorders according to the latest methods. The facility founded in 1909 expanded rapidly over the years, and by 1938 it accommodated 900 patients. A unique part of the Apeldoornse Bos - the Paedagogium Achisomog (Achisomog means 'support for my brother') - was a special residential ward for children who were mentally challenged or had behavioural disorders. In 1938, it had 74 patients.

In the night of 21 to 22 January 1943 the Apeldoornse Bos was 'emptied' of its residents. With Aus der Fünten in charge, the Apeldoornse Bos was searched, and helpless patients were beaten and abused and loaded first into trucks and then transferred to cattle cars. The train with patients and nurses headed straight to Auschwitz, where almost everyone was sent to the gas chambers immediately upon arrival.
