Amersfoort

Amersfoort Concentration Camp was under the authority of the Befehlshaber (Supreme Commander) der Sicherheitspolizei (Secret Police) und des Sicherheitsdienstes (SD). Amersfoort Concentration Camp was established in August 1941. Aside for several months in the spring of 1943, the camp operated until April 1945. More than 35,000 persons were held prisoners in the camp. Transports were sent regularly from Amersfoort over the Dutch border to labour camps and concentration camps. The camp prisoners included members of the resistance movements, criminals, Jehovah's Witnesses, young people who tried to escape forced labour in Germany, and Jews. Although the guards at the camp were generally very tough on the prisoners, they were especially hostile to the latter group. The Jews who were held in this camp were mostly arrested for violating the anti-Jewish measures.
